It could not have been a more exciting day for the Conley boys. Tucker & I showed up early to the last Cardinals home game (vs. the Brewers, who I remember in some distant strange early '80's memory.... hm) and while watching batting practice, one of the Brewers pitchers tossed Tucker a BALL!!
Shortly thereafter, my brother Jason & his son Will arrived. We had a BLAST at the game. Standing room only, so we shifted every couple innings. Sometime around the 7th inning (while we were standing just up from the press boxes) everybody within 3-4 sections was turned around backwards, watching the TVs in the press boxes to see if our pals in Atlanta would take care of the Astros. They did, and everybody went nuts.
This was not at all the last "thrill" of the day though...
In the final inning, the Cards made a push... and HRs insued. A guy named Albert decided to jack his 250th and low and behold we happened to be sitting in the section just to the right of 'Big Mac Land'.... All i could get out of my mouth was "It's comin'! It's comin'!" Everything was a blur. I was trying to get Tucker's glove on my hand (not realizing it was his) and then jumped up and the next thing I knew, my brother was going berzerk, yes, BERZERK! He had just barehanded Albert Pujols' 250th home run. WOW. Jason was pretty overcome. Long story short.... Albert wanted the ball back, it being his 250th and all. We were escorted down to the clubhouse by 5 or 6 security guards and they gave Jason a pretty sweet deal for the ball. We didn't get to meet #5, due to the clinching of the division and the boozing up in the clubhouse. And I think most days my bro will regret giving the ball back. But this day will always be a reminder to me that I have DNA very close to the Cardinals #1 fan: Jason Conley...
FYI: J was very ashamed that I wore a Sox hat to the game.
